| LCM COMMUNITY DISCOUNT CARDS RELEASED It is with great excitement that we have released the new Lander College for Men Community Discount Card. A tremendous amount of work has been put into the production of the card and we hope that it will benefit our entire LCM community. Many of our alumni, kollel members, rebbeim, and talmidim have already expressed appreciation for the money they have saved in the past forty-eight hours since the card's release. Twenty-five vendors have already agreed to participate in this program, and we anticipate several more will be joining in the upcoming weeks. (Please see the left column of the newsletter for all participating vendors). We have attempted to create a network of discount-providing stores in most of the major industries that our community members regularly frequent. If you are a member of the LCM Alumni Society and still waiting to receive your card, (or plan on joining the society and would like to receive a card), please email the Office of Alumni Affairs ASAP at aryeh.young@touro.edu. In order to maintain the success of this new program, there are several requests that we would like to make to all cardholders. First, it is absolutely imperative that cardholders do not give this card to anybody besides their spouse - this includes, but is not limited to, parents, siblings, friends, kallahs, children etc. The card may only be used by the individual listed on the card. Violation of this agreement is sufficient grounds to terminate the card and constitutes a definite violation of halacha, according to the p'sak received from one of our LCM Roshei Yeshiva. (You are purchasing this card with the agreement it will not be given to others).
Second, we kindly request that all cardholders please be patient with store owners and cashiers as the program gets off the ground. Remember, that every time you swipe the LCM card, you represent Lander College for Men/Beis Medrash L'Talmud and it is of tremendous importance that our community is portrayed favorably. Lastly, please attempt, whenever possible, to frequent the stores listed below in order to maintain and further the mutual relationship between LCM and the particular vendor. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Enjoy and save! Have a wonderful Shabbos, Aryeh Young Director of Alumni Affairs Lander College for Men 718-820-4883 (office) 516-512-4494 (cell) aryeh.young@touro.edu

| By HaRav Dovid Mirsky shlit"a The pasuk calls Yosef a ben z'kunim. We usually translate this to mean "a son of his old age". Rashi a different p'shat from Onkelos that it means bar chachim - that Yaakov Avinu taught Yosef all the Torah that he learnt from Yeshivas Shem and Aver. At first glance this seems difficult; we can understand favoring Yosef with a Kesones Pasim that the brothers did not receive, but would Yaakov really deny the other brothers of the Torah Ha'kdosha?
Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky answers based on the following idea. At the end of Parshas Toldos, Yitzchak and Rivka tell Yaakov to go to Lavan. Instead he decides to first take 14 years to learn in Yeshivas Shem and Aver. How could Yaakov do this when his parents told him to go to Lavan? Furthermore, this was not exactly like deciding to stay a shana betin Israel. He was 63 years old and had been learning Torah from Avraham and Yitzchak since he was a small child! Why then was there such an urgency to go to Yeshiva? Rav Yaakov explains that Avraham and Yitzchak taught Torah on the highest level, but in an environment removed from the people around them. Shem and Aver were different. Shem grew up during the dor hamabul and Aver lived through the dor haflagah. Yet they were able to learn even in the midst of those difficult environments. Therefore, Yaakov needed to go there before he went to Lavan so that he could learn the special toras hagalus of survival. Now we can better understand our Rashi. Certainly Yaakov Avinu taught all of the sh'vatim the Torah that he learned from Avraham and Yitzchak. It was only the unique Torah of Shem and Aver that he sensed Yosef would need to survive in Mitzrayim. Based on this we can suggest the following. In Parshas Vayigash Yosef sent Yaakov wagons to remind him of the last thing they had learned together, the sugya of eglah arufah. This mitzvah says that if an unidentifiable corpse is found, the closest city mustachieve a kapara for not paying more attention to this wandering soul. This no longer seems to be a random sugya which they happened to be holding at, rather an example of the Torah of Galus, demonstrating that Hashem made a special Mitzvah for the sake of the lone individual in a place far from home. Surely we can understand how this could give Yosef the strength to maintain his service of Hashem in Mitzrayim. Of course this is not only for Yaakov by Lavan or Yosef in Mitzrayim. We are all in Galus and must keep this in mind when we find ourselves challenged to keep the Torah in it's kedusha until we can get out of our present Galus, bim'heira b'yameinu. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Mirsky N'Shei Lander Pre-Chanukah Event This Motzei Shabbos, Dec. 20th This Motzei Shabbos, December, 20th, the N'Shei Lander will be hosting an interactive writing workshop, presented by Susie Garber, an author and member of our community. Alumni Hashkafa Shiur Continues Come enjoy a shiur on the parsha and its timeless lessons and reunite with the Mashgiach and former chaveirim.
