Following an inspirational shiur from the internationally renowned HaRav Noach Oelbaum shlit"a, over 150 students, alumni, and Rebbeim headed to the fourth floor for leibidik dancing and celebration. Everyone danced together in large circles and eventually smaller circles formed, as Talmidim had the privilege of dancing with their shiur Rebbe. Approximately twenty alumni attended the mesibah and enjoyed the opportunity to witness the exponential growth that LCM has experienced over the past few years. The evening concluded with a delicious seudas chanukah (Dougie's) hosted by the student council. N'shei Melave Malka Postponed Due to Snow This week's women's melave malka, scheduled to take place at the home of Daniella Dvash, has been postponed due to expected snow. It will be rescheduled after the winter intersession. Please stay tuned and we apologize for any inconvenience.
Kollel/Alumni Team Wins LCM Intramural Basketball Championships Led by league MVP, Yonasan Meyers, the LCM Kollel/Alumni Team won its first championship this past semester. In a nail-biting 51-50 victory, the team proved that the veterans still have what it takes to win. Due to increased interest, there might be a new alumni team -separate from the kollel team - participating in the LCM intramurals next semester. Please contact the Office of Alumni Affairs if you are interested. The league plays on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and is free for all LCM students and alumni. Come on down and play!

Yonah Zimmerman on his engagement to Esther Schwartz of Kew Gardens Hills -
Shalom Hopkovitz on his engagement to Rachel Marshel of Brooklyn -
Meir Nemetsky on his engagement to Perla Barocas of Los Angeles | By HaRav Moshe Crystal shlit"a In Parshas Vayechi, Yaakov Avinu gave most of his sons brachos before his death, but for Shimon and Levi, he issued a warning. He explained that they were too hasty in taking revenge against from the city of Sh'chem, and he criticized them for letting weapons of violence become the tools of their trade. When Rashi explains this criticism, he says Yaakov means to convey that they were using tools that did not belong to them. Rather, they have lifted violence from the domain of Eisav. The Mirrer Mashgiach, Rav Yerucham Levovitz zt"l (in Daas Torah) explains that this was a separate criticism. Besides taking issue with their deeds themselves, he wants them to look at where they are coming from. They are doing actions which wereare not really their own, but imitating the ways of others. Rav Yerucham says that he once met a man whose body language immediately reminded him of another man. As it turned out, that other man was his best friend. We often do not realize the extent to which we are influenced by others. We may have good friends who help us grow and influence us for good, but other acquaintances and societal influences can have the opposite effect. Yaakov Avinu's words warn us that we should be more cognizant of why we do what we do. Just like each of the shevatim was given a brachah to make him aware of his unique potential, so too, we should think more about being ourselves and bringing out the good qualities which we were blessed with and not let them unknowingly be lost by subconsciously imitating others and living a superficial existence. Rav Wolbe (cf. Avnei Shlomo, v.2, p.77) related a story about many Chassidim who went to Kotzk to be with the Kotzker Rebbe for the Yamim Noraim. However, to their great chagrin, the rebbe did not come out from his hisbod'dus throughout the whole period. Finally, during the hakafos on Simchas Torah, the Kotzker Rebbe emerged from his seclusion. He saw the many visitors involved in the hakafos and shouted "what are you doing here?" Everyone turned white with fear and trepidation. The Rebbe asked the same question again, "what are you doing here?" Before the older chassidim could restrain him, one young chassid bravely offered the following explanation: "My mother gave me my tzitzis when I was three. My father got me my tefillin when I was 13. My father got me a gemara so I could learn. Now I want something of my own!" The Kotzker Rebbe listened and responded, "If so, it's good that you came!" Good Shabbos, Moshe Crystal Alumni Hashkafa Shiur Continues Note: The shiur will not be taking place this week, because the Mashgiach is in Israel on a recruiting visit. Come enjoy a shiur on the parsha and its timeless lessons and reunite with the Mashgiach and former chaveirim.
The shiur is held every Wednesday at 9:15 PM (culminating with Maariv at 10:00) and will continue every Wednesday evening unless otherwise notified by email. The location will be on the 4th floor in the President's conference room of Lander College for Men, 75-31 150th St., Kew Gardens Hills, NY.
If possible, please RSVP if you plan on attending. | |
