| PURIM AT LCM
Purim is finally here and for many of us, Purim brings back some of our fondest Lander memories. The hilarious shpiels, the leibidik chagigos, and the festive seudos celebrated with our Rebbeim were all unique experiences, seperating Purim apart from the day-to-day grind of our sedarim and classes. Although most of us do not have chance to regularly participate in LCM activites, we would like to warmly encourage all of our alumni to come and partake in the yeshiva's Purim festivities. Affixed below is a schedule for Purim at LCM. We look forward to seeing you! Good Shabbos, Aryeh Young Director of Alumni Affairs

| LCM Alumni Kollel Kicks Off
Thanks to the diligence and determination of LCM alumnus, Ari Shore, our monthly, Sunday morning kollel is now a reality. The inaugural shiur took place this past Sunday and over twenty alumni participated. Alumni traveled from Brooklyn, Passaic, Staten Island, and Queens to hear Rav Soloveichik shlit"a deliver a stimulating halacha l'ma'aseh shiur on mishloach manos and matanos l'evyonim.
This was the first shiur in an ongoing monthly series of shiurim designed specifically for our alumni, featuring different Beis Medrash L'Talmud roshei yeshiva. The topic and maggid shiur for the next shiur will be announced shortly and all are encouraged to attend.
The shiur takes place every four weeks at 9:45 am at LCM, and of course, breakfast is served.
Thank you to Ari Shore for sponsoring breakfast. If you would like to sponsor breakfast in the future, please contact Ari at 315-569-7836.
Shabbaton Round-Up The first annual LCM Alumni Shabbaton was a huge success! Over 100 alumni participated in the event, in addition to women, children, rebbeim, the dean, and other faculty members. All in all, over 200 people participated in the Shabbos reunion and a great time was had by all. The shabbos began with a leibidik davening, lead by Gabi Shull, followed by an enjoyable seudas shabbos. The dining room was rearranged to create a more family-oriented environment, and each table was beautifully decorated with colorful flowers, sponsored by Sochi Hornung. Thank you, Sochi! The Chair of the Alumni Council, Moshe Ornstein delivered a d'var torah, recalling his LCM experiences, noting the differences he sees in the current LCM student body compared to those of the early days. "It used to be a certain member of the hanhalah permitted select students to have a Super Bowl party in the dorms. Now, there are probably students at LCM who don't even know what the Super Bowl is!," recalled Ornstein. Perhaps, though, the highlight of the evening was the Viennese Table that followed. Everyone enjoyed the gourmet desserts, as people mingled and schmoozed with people they had not seen in years. As the dining room was reset for Shabbos day, people stayed for several hours into the night, enjoying the opportunity to catch up with old friends. Shabbos day proved to be just as enjoyable. Rav Shmulewitz addressed the alumni during davening, discussing the importance of tzedakah and hakaras hatov. At the second seuda, Yair Daar gave a memorable d'var torah, generating laughter throught the dining room, joking about LCM's lack of a defined identity, yet, the importance of being able to define yourself by what you are not. Later in the afternoon, Rav Soloveichik delivered a stimulating pre-Mincha shiur, and shalosh seudos brought back the memories of old. Men and women enjoyed separate shalosh suedos, allowing the women to meet new friends in the community, and help strengthen the Lander N'shei. Meanwhile, the men gathered for an inspirational yeshivaesque shalosh seudos, with singing and stirring divrei chizuk from the Mashgiach. Motzei Shabbos added a different element to the shabbaton. Many alumni and faculty who could not join us for shabbos drove in for the melave malka. Dr. Lander delivered divrei bracha to our alumni, and then stayed on hand to watch the Best of Lander Purim Shpiels - a Burg and Bomzer production, that brought back many memories and laughter to all. Thank you to Jon and Sruli for all of your hard work for making the evening a tremendous success. Finally, as the night began to slip away, alumni enjoyed a delicious dairy melave malka and received brand new, beautiful LCM sweatshirts to take home and show off to their communities. All in all, it was a huge success and we are already planning on how to make next year's shabbaton even better! Attached below is alumnus, Eliezer Ornstein's, perspective on the shabbaton:
"I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this past Shabbos; after all, whatever good times we may or may not have had, many of us seemed to be in a big rush to be done with the institution as students. But when I found myself making the familiar walk to that familiar building erev shabbos slightly late (some things remain constant) and settling into the very seat where I spent so many sedarim and minyanim... I felt something. Without sounding horribly cliche`, the Lander experience of my past was suddenly very much in my present, as I exchanged smiling nods with many friends; while some are close, with the others, it was feeling the connection that one achieves through shared experience.
While I have kept in touch with many good friends I went together through Lander with, I found myself almost overwhelmed - unable to walk through the room without finding someone to catch up and share a laugh with, over and over." | N'shei Lander Adar Event Focuses on Purim and Kiruv
This past motzei shabbos, almost twenty LCM wives gathered for a pre-purim motzei shabbos get-together. It was an exciting night filled with fun and inspiration. The women organized a raffle (with homemade prizes) to raise money for Chickens for Shabbos, watched an inspirational video on the difference one person can make in this world, and then put the message into action, preparing mishloach manos for less religious co-workers and classmates. (Of course, they also made their own Purim cookies). Thank you to Ilana Schwartz for organizing this event! This was the second n'shei event in the past month, following a highly popular shiur from R' Tannenbaum, Beis Medrash L'Talmud's newest maggid shiur.LCM Alumni Council Meeting Scheduled for Wed. Night
The LCM Alumni Council will be meeting this Wednesday at 8:00 Pm. If any alumni would like to contribute ideas to be discussed at the meeting, please contact the Office of Alumni Affairs and we will be happy to add your issues to the agenda. As always, input is appreciated!
Database Updates
The LCM Alumni Council is currently working to gather up-to-date information on all former LCM/Beis Medrash L'Talmud students. This is a tremendous undertaking and is being done to create an effective method of maintaining contact with all alumni. Many of our alumni do not receive our newsletters and are not made aware of alumni events. Furthermore, LCM would like to be able to send LCM memorabilia and other gifts in the mail to our alumni. Most likely, you will be hearing from LCM alumnus, Chananel Gez, this week, if you have not yet received a phone call from him. We will be collecting a database that includes, phone numbers, addresses, emails, spouse's name, current occupation, and year of graduation. We appreciate your assistance in helping us with this endeavor. Thank you, Chananel!Alumni Hashkafa Shiur Continues Come enjoy a shiur on the parsha and its timeless lessons and reunite with the Mashgiach and former chaveirim.
The shiur is held every Wednesday at 9:15 PM (culminating with Maariv at 10:00) and will continue every Wednesday evening unless otherwise notified by email. The location will be on the 4th floor in the President's conference room of Lander College for Men, 75-31 150th St., Kew Gardens Hills, NY. If possible, please RSVP if you plan on attending. | |
